The history of phonetics: tracing the evolution of the study of speech sounds

In the early 19th century, Humboldt proposed a system of phonetic notation based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which is still in use today. The IPA was first published in 1888 by the International Phonetic Association and has since undergone several revisions.

The field of phonetics received a major boost in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the advent of new technologies such as the phonograph and the telephone. These new technologies allowed for the precise measurement and analysis of speech sounds, leading to a deeper understanding of the phonetic system of languages.

One of the most influential figures in phonetics during this time was the British phonetician Henry Sweet. Sweet is considered the father of modern phonetics and is credited with developing many of the techniques and methods still in use today. He also played a key role in the development of the IPA and the introduction of diacritics to indicate different phonetic features.

In the 20th century, phonetics continued to evolve with the development of new technologies such as the sound spectrograph and the computer. These new tools allowed for even more precise analysis of speech sounds and led to the discovery of new phonetic phenomena.
